The "worst Web ad of 2007":

Pop-ups and pop-unders - the lowest ROI generators, based on 421 responses from net marketers that attended ad:tech in '07.

MarketingSherpa asked internet marketers what tactics worked and didn't work in 2007 and where they plan to spend their budget in 2008.

From the annual study:

Best Tactics:

  • behavioral targeting - offers a stronger ROI than contextual targeting, 44% of the marketers said so, while 21% cited contextual advertising

  • SEO (search engine optimization) - 57% of the surveyed marketers said it outperforms other tactics

  • direct email using house lists - cited by 42%

  • paid search remains a strong money maker for 34% of those surveyed

Worst Online Performers:

  • rich media

  • banner ads

  • pop-ups and pop-unders

Budget Plans:

  • Pay-per-click (PPC) and behavioral ads get a larger piece of marketers' budgets
